“Setting” is a critical factor to consider when developing a prevention plan: Strategies that may work well for addressing a given problem in an urban setting may fail completely out in the country. The following case study takes a close look at one rural community, getting ready to write a proposal for a three-year, SIG sub-recipient grant from the State Department of Public Health, Division of Substance Abuse Prevention. The community needs help developing plans for activities over the next three years.

Please read the case carefully. Then consider the following questions and post your answers on the Message Board.

  1. Based on what you have learned in this course, which strategies would be most effective in addressing the problems in this community? Why?

  2. In what ways did the setting affect the prevention approach you selected? What particular factors are important to consider when developing prevention programs in rural settings?

After you have answered the questions, please review and respond to the comments made by your fellow participants. Do you agree with their responses? Disagree? Need clarification? Post your feedback to the Message Board. Then come back and visit regularly—others may have posed questions to you!

You have completed your work for today.
Tomorrow, please proceed to Module 8: Using Multiple Strategies.
