Please insert into your computer the CD-ROM (Disc 1) you received from us and play the communications video. To read a copy of the video transcript, click on the print video icon.

This case example describes a community initiative that involved a newspaper series in Portland, Maine, focusing on the human and financial costs of alcohol abuse in the state of Maine.

After watching the video, please consider the following questions and post your answers on the Message Board:

  1. In Portland, you saw a creative way that a community implemented a communications effort to foster awareness and discussion on a substance abuse problem. What steps did the Portland community take to implement communications as an effective strategy?

  2. Do you think this approach might work in your own community? Why, or why not?

  3. Can you describe an important issue in your community and a way that communications could be (or has been) used to address it? (Please specify the type of strategy used, i.e., public education, social marketing, media advocacy, media literacy, or a combination.)

After you have answered the questions, please review and respond to the comments made by your fellow participants. Do you agree with their responses? Disagree? Need clarification? Post your feedback to the Message Board. Then come back and visit regularly—others may have posed questions to you!

You have completed Week 1 of this course. Hurrah!
On Monday, please proceed to Module 5: Collaboration.
