This case example describes a community initiative
that involved laypeople in a policy-making project: In Gloucester,
Massachusetts, the Gloucester Prevention Network worked with
young people to develop a petition drive aimed at banning cigarette
vending machines in public places.
After watching the video, please consider the following
questions and post your answers on the Message
Board:
- In Gloucester, you saw what can happen when a
community implements a policy that restricts access and availability.
What steps did the Gloucester community take to implement policy
as an effective strategy?
- Do you think this approach might work in your
own community? Why, or why not?
- Can you describe an important issue in your community
and a way that one of the policy strategies could be (or has
been) used to address it?
After you have answered the questions, please review and respond to the comments
made by your fellow participants. Do you agree with their responses? Disagree?
Need clarification? Post your feedback to the Message
Board. Then come back and visit regularly—others may have posed
questions to you!
You have completed your work for today.
Tomorrow, please proceed to Module 3: Enforcement.
